How to Prepare for the dMAT Exam: Complete Guide for Indian Students 2026

You have heard about the dMAT. You know you need to take it before 26 September 2026 if your undergraduate degree is in engineering, commerce, finance, economics, or business and you want to apply for Masters in Germany from Summer Semester 2027.

The Most Important Thing to Understand

About dMAT

Before preparing, you need to understand what the dMAT actually tests.

The dMAT is not a knowledge exam. It does not test what you memorised from your engineering or commerce textbooks. It is not like your semester exams. It is not like IELTS or TOEFL.

The dMAT is an aptitude test. It measures how well you think, reason, and apply knowledge to solve unfamiliar problems. German universities value these cognitive skills because Masters-level study requires analytical thinking and problem solving, not just memorised facts.

This is good news for you. You cannot cram for the dMAT the way you crammed for semester exams. But you can systematically build and sharpen the analytical skills it measures. That is what this guide helps you do.

The dMAT Structure: What You Are

Actually Preparing For

The dMAT has two modules with a break in between. Total duration is three and a half hours.

Core Module: This module is the same for every dMAT participant regardless of their field of study. It measures general cognitive and analytical skills through three types of tasks.

Figure sequences: Visual pattern recognition tasks where you identify the rule governing a sequence of abstract figures and select the correct next element.

Mathematical equations: Numerical reasoning tasks involving relationships between numbers and equations. These test mathematical logic, not complex calculation.

Latin squares: Grid-based logical reasoning tasks where you identify patterns across rows and columns and fill in missing elements. Similar to advanced Sudoku logic.

Subject Module (General Academic Module): For the APS verification process in India, all students take the General Academic Module regardless of their specific field. This module tests your ability to apply cognitive and analytical skills to academic problem-solving scenarios.

The tasks in the subject module present a typical academic problem followed by related questions. They require transfer and application skills. You are given all the information you need within the task itself. Prior subject knowledge helps with familiarity but the tasks do not require memorised formulas or factual recall.

Is dMAT Pass or Fail

This is the most important clarification for Indian students who are worried about failing.

The dMAT is NOT a pass or fail examination. A lower score does not automatically cause your APS application to be refused. What matters for APS completeness is that the certificate is submitted with your documents.

Your dMAT certificate shows two scores:

Percentile rank: What percentage of other participants scored lower than or equal to you. A percentile rank of 65 means you scored higher than 65 percent of all participants.

dMAT score: A number between 0 and 200 with a mean of 100. A score above 100 means you performed above average.

German universities decide individually how to use these scores. Some may set a cut-off percentile for competitive programmes. Most currently use it as one of several indicators alongside your academic grades, statement of purpose, and language scores.

The goal is not to panic about the score. The goal is to perform as well as you reasonably can with structured preparation. A strong dMAT score strengthens your overall Masters application significantly.

How to Prepare: The 6-Week Plan

Given that the dMAT test date is 26 September 2026 and registration deadline is 15 September 2026, you have approximately 10 to 12 weeks from today to prepare if you start now.

Here is the recommended 6-week focused preparation plan.

Weeks 1 and 2: Understand the format and baseline yourself.

Take one or two practice tests from similar aptitude assessments to understand where your current level is. Good baseline tests to use are TestAS sample papers (freely available at testdaf.de), GRE analytical reasoning sample questions, and logical reasoning sections from GMAT free practice tests.

Do not worry about scores at this stage. You are simply mapping where you are strongest and where you need the most work.

Focus areas to identify in weeks 1 and 2: Are figure sequence tasks easy or hard for you? Are mathematical equation tasks fast or slow? Are Latin square tasks intuitive or confusing?

Weeks 3 and 4: Targeted skill building.

Figure sequences: Practice visual pattern recognition daily. Sources include IQ test books, logical reasoning apps like Lumosity and Elevate, and abstract reasoning practice tests freely available online. Aim for 20 to 30 problems per day.

Mathematical equations: Practice number relationships and algebraic logic. The GRE Quantitative section is excellent practice. Khan Academy's algebra and reasoning modules are free and well-structured. Focus on speed and accuracy together, not just correctness.

Latin squares: Practice grid-based logic puzzles. Advanced Sudoku (not basic Sudoku, medium to hard level) trains exactly the right cognitive skill. Spend 15 minutes daily on this specific task type.

Weeks 5 and 6: Full timed practice and test simulation.

In the final two weeks before the test, practice under timed conditions. Set a timer and complete full practice sets without interruptions. This trains your brain for the stamina required in a three and a half hour examination.

Simulate the full test experience: Sit at a desk with no distractions. Use only the time allowed. Take a 15-minute break between modules as you would in the real test. Review every wrong answer and understand why you got it wrong.

What NOT to Do When Preparing

Do not revise undergraduate textbook content hoping it will appear directly in the exam. The dMAT does not test memorised subject knowledge.

Do not try to find past papers from previous dMAT test sessions. The dMAT is brand new in India in 2026. There are no previous Indian dMAT papers available. Use similar aptitude test formats instead.

Do not leave registration until close to the deadline. Test centre seats are allocated on a first-come first-served basis. The Chennai centre will fill up. Register now at the official dMAT portal.

Do not skip the subject module preparation thinking you can rely entirely on general reasoning. The subject module in the General Academic track also requires focused analytical practice.

Registration: How to Sign Up

Registration is open now and closes 15 September 2026.

Step 1: Go to the official dMAT registration portal at d-mat.de.

Step 2: Create a new account using your valid email address.

Step 3: Fill in your personal and academic details accurately. Your name must match your passport exactly.

Step 4: Select Chennai as your preferred test centre if you are in Tamil Nadu. Other centres include Bengaluru, Mumbai, New Delhi, Kolkata, Pune, Ahmedabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, and Mananthavady.

Step 5: Pay the registration fee of 150 euros to g.a.s.t. This fee is in addition to your regular APS fee. Payment is processed online during registration.

Step 6: Download and save your registration confirmation immediately. You will need this for the test centre.

Register early. Do not wait until September. Popular test centre slots fill weeks before the deadline.

On Test Day: What to Expect

The dMAT is a computer-based test conducted at an authorised g.a.s.t. test centre.

Bring your valid passport or government-issued photo ID. Your name on the ID must match the name on your registration.

Arrive at least 30 minutes before your scheduled test time. Late arrivals may not be admitted.

The test is conducted in English.

Total duration is approximately three and a half hours including a break between the core module and the subject module.

You will work on a computer provided at the test centre. You are not allowed to use your own devices, notes, or reference materials.

After the Test: Your Certificate

Results are published on 12 October 2026 for the September test session.

Log in to your participant portal at d-mat.de using your registration credentials. Download your official dMAT certificate immediately.

Your certificate shows your percentile rank and dMAT score for both the core module and the subject module separately, plus a total score.

The certificate is valid indefinitely. There is no expiry date. You sit the dMAT once.

Submit your dMAT certificate together with your complete APS application documents to APS India. APS India will reference your dMAT result on your final APS certificate.

Who Is Exempt from dMAT

Before investing time in preparation, confirm you actually need the dMAT.

You do NOT need dMAT if:

Your undergraduate degree is outside engineering, commerce, accounting, finance, economics, or business. Healthcare students including BSc Nursing, BPT, and BPharm are not currently required to take dMAT.

You are applying for Winter Semester 2026/27. The first certificates are only available from 12 October 2026, after Winter 2026/27 deadlines. dMAT applies only from Summer Semester 2027 onwards.

You completed your APS online registration before 29 June 2026. This exemption applies even if your APS documents are still being verified.

You shipped your complete APS application documents before 29 June 2026.

You are applying through an officially confirmed exchange, double-degree, or university partnership programme.

If any of these exemptions apply to you, you do not need to register for or take the dMAT for your current APS procedure.

Interdisciplinary Degrees: Are You Affected

This is the most common source of confusion among Indian students.

If your degree sits between categories, for example Engineering Management, Business Analytics, Industrial Engineering, Data Science, Financial Technology, or similar interdisciplinary programmes, your status is determined by the official Affected Fields List published by APS India.

Important clarification from verified sources: B.Sc. Computer Science, BCA, standalone Information Technology, Data Science, AI/ML, Cyber Security, B.Sc. Biotechnology, Pharmacy, Architecture, and Agriculture unless it is Agricultural Engineering are not automatically included even if the degree title contains words like Technology or Management.

The official wording on your degree certificate and transcript is decisive, not the programme's marketing name.
