dMAT 2026: The New Exam Indian Students Need to Apply for Masters in Germany | Namma Global Careers

If you are an Indian student planning to apply for a Masters degree in Germany in 2026 or 2027, there is a new exam you need to know about.

It is called the dMAT. The digital Master Aptitude Test.

Registration for the first Indian test session opened on 29 June 2026. This post is based entirely on verified information from the official dMAT website at d-mat.de.

What Is dMAT

The dMAT is a standardised academic aptitude test that German universities are introducing as a new selection element for Masters programme admissions.

It tests how well you can think, analyse, and apply reasoning across academic problem-solving scenarios. Not what you have memorised from your undergraduate textbooks.

From 2026, the dMAT is being introduced as an additional element in the APS documentation and verification process for Indian graduates applying to Masters programmes in Germany.

Who Needs to Take dMAT in 2026

In the 2026 introductory phase, dMAT is required only for applicants whose undergraduate degree is in one of these fields:

Engineering Commerce Accounting Finance Economics Business or Management

If your undergraduate degree is in any of these fields and you are planning to apply for a Masters programme in Germany for Summer Semester 2027 or later, you are required to take the dMAT as part of your APS documentation process.

Who does NOT need dMAT right now:

Healthcare students are not currently required to take dMAT. Indian nurses with BSc Nursing, physiotherapists with BPT, and pharmacists with BPharm or MPharm are not in the listed fields for the 2026 introductory phase.

However this is the introductory phase only. The scope of dMAT is expected to expand to additional fields in future years. Monitor d-mat.de for updates.

Test Dates for India 2026

These are the verified official dates from the official dMAT website:

Registration opened: 29 June 2026 Registration deadline: 15 September 2026 Test date: 26 September 2026 Results and certificate: 12 October 2026

Do not delay. Register before 15 September 2026.

Test Centres in India

The dMAT will be offered at these cities across India:

Ahmedabad Bengaluru Bhopal Chandigarh Chennai Kolkata Mananthavady Mumbai New Delhi Pune

Chennai is on the list. Tamil Nadu students do not need to travel to another state to take this exam.

Always verify the exact centre address at d-mat.de before registering as centre capacity may vary.

What the dMAT Tests

The dMAT has two modules:

Core module: Measures general cognitive and analytical skills across three subtests. This module is the same for all participants regardless of field of study.

Subject module: Tests your ability to apply analytical skills to academic problem-solving in your specific field.

Currently available subject modules:

Chemistry Physics Computer Science Electrical Engineering Mechanical Engineering

Total exam duration: three and a half hours with a break between modules.

This is a thinking test, not a knowledge test. The best preparation is practising analytical reasoning, logical thinking, and data interpretation rather than revising undergraduate subject content.

The dMAT Score and Certificate

After the test you receive an official dMAT certificate showing results on two scales:

Percentile rank: What percentage of other participants received a lower or equal score compared to yours.

dMAT score: A value between 0 and 200 with a mean of 100. A score above 100 means you performed above the average of all participants.

The certificate is valid indefinitely. No expiry date. You download it from the participant portal from 12 October 2026 for the September test.

Which German Universities Use dMAT

Currently two German universities use dMAT as a selection criterion:

RWTH Aachen University: One of Germany's most prestigious technical universities. Uses dMAT for the MSc Battery Science and Technology in Engineering programme.

Georg-August University Gottingen: Uses dMAT for the Data Science MSc programme.

The list of universities using dMAT will grow significantly as the test becomes more established. Indian students who take and score well in 2026 will have a competitive advantage as more universities adopt it in 2027 and beyond.

dMAT and APS: How They Connect

The APS at the German Embassy in India verifies the academic documents of Indian students applying for Masters programmes in Germany.

The dMAT is now being introduced as an additional element within the APS process for the fields listed above. Taking and passing the dMAT becomes part of the APS documentation package for affected students.

Always check the specific requirements of the university and programme you are applying to at d-mat.de and the university's own admissions page.
